EVLT
Why Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)?
EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment is a treatment for varicose veins in which an optical fiber laser is inserted into a vein via a catheter which is inserted into the vein through a small incision. The laser light causes the vein to contract and seal as the optical fiber is slowly removed. Ultrasound guidance is often used during this procedure to direct the EVLT laser.
Local anesthesia is used to numb the incision area and a Tumescent Local Anesthesia is used around the affected vein to ease any minor discomfort during the procedure. The treatment usually takes between 1-2 hours and the patient walks out under his or her own power. The leg is bandaged and/or placed in a stocking that the patient wears for up to 3 weeks afterward to ease recovery and help reduce bruising. Foam sclerotherapy is often performed at the time of the procedure or within the first few weeks after the initial EVLT to treat branch spider veins for a final cosmetic improvement.

How to Prepare for Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) Treatment:
- Avoid applying lotion to the legs before the procedure.
- Certain medications should also be avoided. Some physicians recommend avoiding aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medications for 48-72 hours before Sclerotherapy. Your Kass Clinics vein treatment provider will discuss all your medications including over the counter drugs, herbs, and dietary supplements you are taking.
- Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to your treatment.
- Drink plenty of water the day before and day of treatment.
What to Expect After EVLT:
Complications from EVLT are extremely rare.
Most discomfort will last less than 36 hours and can be mitigated by an over the counter non-aspirin pain reliever and ice if desired.
Some minor soreness, bruising, or a feeling of tightness in the thigh or calf is normal and will pass. Every person heals at a different rate, but most discomfort or bruising will pass quickly.
Most Important: Medically prescribed compression stockings will be required for several weeks after the procedure. This is to help reduce stress and swelling to the leg as your body heals and speed up recovery. During this healing process walking and normal daily activities are encouraged.
- Try to avoid rigorous activities such as high impact aerobics, jumping or intense gym workouts for a few days after the procedure.
