1. What can be treated? Any vein that bothers you cosmetically or has symptoms is treatable.  This includes the legs, face, and chest.

2. How are veins treated? There are a number of treatment options available, depending on the severity of your problem.

• Sclerotherapy - Considered the “Gold Standard,” a solution is injected causing the vein to be absorbed by the body naturally.  This includes foam Sclerotherapy, ultrasound guided Sclerotherapy, and liquid Sclerotherapy.
• Phlebectomy - An office-based minor surgical procedure to remove large varicose veins through pinhole punctures under local anesthesia.  It does not usually require sutures, minimizing any scarring, and patients resume normal activities right away.
• EVLT - Utilizing laser technology to close the vein and be absorbed into the body.  Performed in-office with local anesthetic and patients can resume normal activities right away.

3. What if I do not treat my veins? It is recommended to treat varicose veins at an early age, even in teens, especially if there is a prominent family history.  Only a small percentage of patients have isolated varicose and spider veins not due to any other causes, whereas the majority will eventually notice a worsening of their condition.  The larger veins are at increased risk of clots and skin ulcerations.

4. What about insurance? As always, insurance coverage is not guaranteed.  Based on the medical necessity of your condition and  onsurance company, we can answer your questions regarding the financial obligation of treatment.

5. What if I am pregnant? Treatment before, between, and after pregnancy makes future pregnancies much more comfortable, improves self-image and slows the progression of new varicose veins.  Many complaints of tiredness, restlessness, and heaviness in the legs, muscle cramps during the night, swollen feet, and new onset or worsening varicose veins all impair the pregnant woman’s well-being.  Although during pregnancy women are not a candidate for treatment, compression stockings may help with symptoms.

1. Cleanse and Tone: The importance of cleaning and exfoliating your skin twice daily is the key to minimizing your pores, getting an even skin tone, and having a smooth skin texture.
2. Prevent: Preventing sun damage will keep your skin from rapidly aging, and we recommend using a Vitamin C Serum to protect your skin cells, the foundation of your face. Apply only in the morning.
3. Moisturize: The correct moisturizer will depend on your skin type and age.  Dehydration causes the skins foundation to fail and it aids in premature aging of the skin.  Apply morning and evening after toning your skin.
4. Protect: Sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide will give you the best protection against the suns harmful and damaging rays.  Apply in the morning and reapply when in the sun.

Here are a few myths you should know about.

Hemorrhoids are the intestines coming out of the body.

• A hemorrhoid is a vascular structure that aids in stool control.  A hemorrhoid is described as being internal or external.  Internal hemorrhoids are inside the body.  These internal hemorrhoids can become prolapsed which means they can temporarily come outside of the body.  External hemorrhoids are outside of the body.

Anal sex causes hemorrhoids.

• Anal sex does not cause hemorrhoidal issues, but it can agitate and worsen the symptoms.

Hemorrhoids only happen to old people.

• Hemorrhoidal issues do not discriminate against age or sex.  Although it is more common in men than women.

So here’s what I have learned.  Everyone has hemorrhoids.  Yep, I said it.  We all have hemorrhoids; they are normal anatomy of the anal canal.  They have an important function and act as a cushion that blocks fecal material from escaping the anus at all times, which is known as bowel incontinence.

A number of factors may lead to hemorrhoids, which include constipation or diarrhea, exercise, nutrition, increased intra-abdominal pressure, pregnancy, and genetics.  The symptoms are usually itching, rectal pain, and or rectal bleeding.

How can I prevent myself from getting them?  Well you can take mild stool softeners, increase exercise, and add fiber to your diet.  Treatment options are as followed; rubber band ligation, sclerotherapy, infrared coagulation, and hemorrhoidectomy.
