What Are Hemorrhoids?
An internal hemorrhoid is an arteriovenous plexus in the lower rectum that forms three cushions to allow for the complete closure of the rectum preventing leakage. They become swollen and inflamed when they enlarge due to loosening of the connective tissue supporting them causing a downward slide. Hemorrhoids are found in two ways:
- Internal – in the lower rectum
- External – outside the anal opening. This condition can be very painful.
What Causes Hemorrhoids?
Normally, vessels inside the hemorrhoid fill with blood. The increased pressure while straining to move stool causes the veins in this tissue to swell and stretch. This can cause hemorrhoids.
Why Do We Develop Hemorrhoids?
It is not certain why hemorrhoids develop in some people over others; however, the development of hemorrhoids can be most commonly associated with:
- Aging
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- Pregnancy – especially during the last 6 months of pregnancy.
- Heredity
- Faulty bowel movement due to the overuse of laxatives or enemas
- Habitual straining with bowel movements
- Spending long periods of time on the toilet (e.g. reading)
- Prolonged sitting
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Eating a low-fiber diet
- Anal/rectal infection
- Excessive weight
How Common are Hemorrhoids?
Many people have hemorrhoids at some point in their life. Over 50% of the population in fact will experience this condition. Excessive pressure on the veins in the pelvic region causes the inflammation. The prevalence of hemorrhoids is equal between men and women but men are more likely to seek treatment. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women as well as men and women who are overweight.
There Are Four Degrees of Hemorrhoid Severity
The most typical symptom of internal hemorrhoids is bright red bleeding. More advanced hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement. Hemorrhoids are actually classified, depending upon severity, into four degrees. Classifying hemorrhoids helps pinpoint which stage your hemorrhoids are in and also helps determine the most optimal mode of treatment for you.
- First degree hemorrhoids: The hemorrhoids remain inside at all times. They do not protrude from the anus.
- Second degree hemorrhoids: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but reduce spontaneously.
- Third degree hemorrhoids: The hemorrhoids protrude with a bowel movement, but require manual insertion.
- Fourth degree hemorrhoids: The most severe hemorrhoids always protrude and cannot be pushed back in. These typically require surgery.
The Kass Clinics Difference
At Kass Clinics we use Infrared Coagulation (IRC) to treat hemorrhoids. The infrared coagulation hemorrhoid device uses heat to pin the connective tissue back in place retracting the hemorrhoid. The treated area heals fully in about three to four weeks. In addition:
- Dr. Kass is a multi board-certified and highly-trained physician
- His patient approach is personal, diagnosing and treating each person as a separate case that begins with a professional, one-on-one consultation.
